Earlier this week, a transgender woman named Jennifer Gable died suddenly from an aneurism while working at her job. She was born Geoffrey Gable, but underwent transition and has spent the last few years living as Jennifer, which was known and accepted among family and friends— or so she thought.
At her funeral, which was an open casket service, Jennifer’s hair was cut short in a “manly” fashion, and she was wearing a suit. An open casket funeral, and this woman had been presented as a man. Even her paid obituary (seen above) spoke of her as a man, and mentioned nothing of her being transgender. They used her birth name, which she had legally changed, and blatantly misgendered her multiple times: “Geoffrey Charles Gable, 32, Boise, passed away suddenly on October 9, 2014 while at his job at Wells Fargo Bank. He was born in Twin Falls on January 27, 1982 to Anthony Clark Gable and Lori Ann Walton.”
This is digusting. This is unacceptable. This stresses the importance of having a will. After death, transgender men and women without a will are given to their families to do with as they please, and you can see why that is a massive problem. Jennifer believed her parents had accepted the situation, but her funeral showed an old photograph of her, of how her dad wanted her to be, regardless of her wishes.
So, to all of my lovely transgender friends out there, even if you’re young and think you have years and years left to live, make sure you have a will. It can save you from disgusting situations like this.
Please reblog this and spread the word. This is such important information for trans men and women.
