Did anyone else find it odd that Magnussen actually showed Sherlock the love letters from Lord Smallwood? It just seems too perfect, too convenient - and very much like a set-up / trap.
Sherlock was approached by Lady Smallwood shortly after his return in November. Magnussen comes to Sherlock’s flat approximately June 18th. I’m basing this on John’s comment that it’s one month past his wedding, which was May 18th.
Between November and June, Sherlock had made numerous attempts to connect with Magnussen without any luck. He told us this much. But, now, on the heels of a ‘Sherlock Holmes is a junkie’ scandal, Magnussen shows up at Baker St. He doesn’t just show up, however, he dangles in front of Sherlock the very thing Sherlock wants: Lord Smallwood’s letters.
Magnussen is a horrible, disgusting excuse of a human being. He is a monomaniacal narcissistic; a psychopath and is without conscience or remorse. His intellect is sinisterly brilliant, however, thus positioning himself as an equal adversary for Sherlock, if not more so. Magnussen has no ties or loyalties - his only pressure point is himself. This makes him exceedingly more dangerous as Sherlock described.
Magnussen’s business is information. He is a media mogul. In Sherlock’s words: “I’m not exaggerating when I say that he [Magnussen] knows the critical pressure point on every person of note or influence in the whole of the Western world and probably beyond. He is the Napoleon of blackmail….”
Therefore:
It stands to reason that Magnussen knew Sherlock had a previous issue with drugs, prior to Sherlock setting up his own scandal. This much was shown.
It stands to reason Magnussen knew Sherlock was seducing Janine.
It’s stands to reason Magnussen had been pressuring Mary Morstan long before her wedding. We did see the set-up in The Empty Hearse.
It stands to reason Magnussen knew of the friendship between Mary and Janine. He did send a telegram to Mary’s wedding.
It stands to reason that Magnussen knew all of this and was using it to his advantage…to further position the players of his game.
